Take Control of Your Heart Health

During the month of February, we spread awareness on cardiovascular disease. Heart disease remains the number one cause of death among men and women in the United States. It is important to continue to be aware of your cardiovascular health and prevention measures year-round!

Your heart is the powerhouse of your body’s intricate system. Maintaining healthy lifestyle habits is your body’s best defense against cardiovascular disease that can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Simple steps can go a long way with keeping your heart healthy and preventing cardiovascular disease.

So what can you do?

Know your risk factors to take preventative action! Discuss your family history you’re your healthcare provider to determine what screenings are appropriate and what preventative measures you can incorporate into your lifestyle

Make an effort to regularly make healthy food choices! Include more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy products in your diet. Eat less salt, saturated fat, and added sugar.

Get Moving! Incorporating at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week, plus muscle-strengthening activities at least 2 days a week.

Quit Smoking! Smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, causing on of every four deaths from CVD. Quitting not only decreases your change of heart disease, but you also help those around your aho are exposed to secondhand smoke. 

Rethink your Drink! Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to heart disease and stroke. Limit your alcohol consumption to 1 drink for woman and 2 drinks for men on the day you are consuming alcohol. 

Know your numbers! Knowing your blood pressure and cholesterol levels will help keep a close eye on how well you are managing your health.
